Industry Leading Linux Development Tools Now Span All Key Intel Processors

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 26, 1999- Cygnus Solutions today announced it is working closely with Intel to optimize its industry leading GNUPro software development tools for Intel's future IA-64 Architecture, beginning with the Merced processor. With this announcement, Cygnus' market leading Linux tools now span all key Intel processors, beginning with the latest Celeron, Pentium II and Pentium III processors, as well as high performance, low power StrongARM processors.

"The GNUPro software tools, optimized for the IA-64 Architecture, will deliver the complete GNUPro development suite for Merced that is required to support software designers working in the open source software environment," said Ron Curry, marketing director, Intel's IA-64 Processor Division. " We expect Cygnus' GNUPro compiler, optimized for Intel's Merced processor, to be a key factor in enabling high performance Linux based operating systems and applications for IA-64 Merced based platforms."

"As Linux continues to gain popularity in the server and workstation segments, extending our tools to cover the IA-64 in addition to the IA-32 product families, is a natural progression, indicating the strength of this momentum," said Alex Daly, president and CEO of Cygnus. "We are pleased to be working with Intel on the delivery of these instrumental Linux-enabling tools for the Intel Architecture and StrongARM processors."

Industry-leading Software Tools for Linux

Cygnus GNUPro features the industry leading GNU compiler - the toolchain used to build the Linux kernel and the GNU debugger that is backed by ten years of Cygnus expertise in porting (and maintaining) the GNU technology to more than 125 host/target combinations.

Cygnus GNUPro Toolkit for Linux is a complete software development toolkit that includes ANSI-conforming C compiler, ANSI-tracking C++ compiler, the Cygnus InsightÔ visual debugger, a macro-assembler, linker/loader, binary utilities, libraries, printed and online documentation. Each release of GNUPro undergoes hundreds of thousands of tests to ensure that software developers have tools that work out-of-the-box with high reliability.

Leader in Open Source Software

As a leader in open source software**, Cygnus engineers have contributed the majority of all new innovations in GNU and drive GNU development tools technology forward by incorporating leading-edge features and optimizations. Cygnus works with platform vendors to ensure the latest GNU technologies are available on their platforms, as well as end users to customize and optimize GNUPro for specific applications. Cygnus offers unparalleled quality, functionality, and support of GNUPro tools in a commercial software development environment for Linux.

Availability

The GNUPro Toolkit for the IA-64 Architecture will be available from Cygnus when Intel's Merced moves into production in mid 2000. Cygnus will offer GNUPro tools for IA-64 Architecture through the GNUPro subscription model that includes regular software upgrades, featuring the latest innovations in GNU technology, as well as developer support services for rapid response and resolution of technical questions or problems. Cygnus will make the source code for IA-64 GNU compiler and tools available to the software development community as IA-64 specifications become public. For more information on GNUPro pricing, the power of Cygnus' source-level support, and the more than 125 cross-development environments supported by Cygnus GNUPro, contact Cygnus corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif. at 1-408-542-9600, 1-800-CYGNUS-1, info@cygnus.com, or visit the Web site at http://www.cygnus.com/product/gnupro.html.
